Lake of Scanno (AQ) - Abruzzo

An ancient legend tells of Mago Bailardo who, through a spell, covered the enemy camp with water, forming Lake Scanno... #tuttitaly

Located at 922 meters above sea level, Lake Scanno was formed naturally following a landslide of Monte Genzana, which blocked the flow of the river Tasso, flooding the surrounding valley.

It is located between the villages of Villalago and Scanno, and given its altitude, in winter, it becomes a frozen lake (although not entirely).

With a depth of about 32 meters, the lake has won the blue flag and is entirely suitable for swimming.

The place is perfect for spending a few days of relaxation, also because it is equipped with all the necessary services to meet the needs of tourists. There is a rest area for campers, a playground for children, rowing boats, and canoes. In addition, there are routes for mountain biking.

There is a path called the Sentiero del Cuore which, in an hour, allows you to reach the most beautiful panoramic point of the lake.

The lake is rich in flora and fauna. Its emerald-colored waters are due not only to the vegetation of the mountains reflected in it but also to the presence of algae and aquatic microorganisms.

The waters are also rich in fish and ideal for fishing. Wolves and bears frequent the area, and numerous species of birds perform in flight, making the landscape even more impressive.

According to a legend, the lake was formed following a fight between the Romans and King Battifolo, a local ruler. Seeing his army in difficulty, he invoked the Magician Bailardo, who, through a spell, covered the enemy camp with water, thus forming the lake of Scanno.

Even today, a magical and mysterious atmosphere reigns around the lake.
