Capital of the lake and a lively commercial and tourist town, it retains the conformation of the ancient medieval village with the characteristic structure of alleys and tower houses and stands out for its elegant shops, numerous restaurants and the many proposals for sporting activities ... #tuttitaly
Iseo is the main village of Lake Iseo and is located in the province of Brescia, about 27 km from Milan Bergamo (BGY), the closest airport.
Before starting our tour, we enjoy a pleasant walk along the lakefront of Iseo, where the panorama extends between the mountains and the lake's islands, including the famous Monte Isola. After an excellent breakfast overlooking the lake, we can start our exploration.
What to visit
The heart of Iseo is Piazza Garibaldi, which has always been a commercial square where the market is set up every Friday. In the center of the court, we see the first statue dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi: the great general placed on top of a tuff base covered with moss.
Near Piazza Garibaldi stands the small Santa Maria del Mercato church, where we can admire several frescoes made in different eras.
The Oldofredi Castle, built in the XIII century, initially had
a defensive function. Towards the end of the 16th century, the fortress became a convent of the Capuchin Franciscan friars, who abandoned it in 1797. Today, the castle is owned by the Municipality.
The Pieve di Sant'Andrea, dating back to the 4th-5th century AD, was the main church of Iseo.
Opposite it, we see the Church of San Giovanni Battista from the 18th century.
What to eat
One of the best-known lake dishes is baked tench, a specialty of Clusane d'Iseo to which the "Week of baked tench" is dedicated, which takes place in July.
