Perched on an overhanging rock wall overlooking the lake, among the most evocative scenarios of Lake Maggiore... #tuttitaly
The hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso clings to an overhang of a rocky wall overlooking the lake in the small town of Leggiuno. It is undoubtedly one of the most evocative scenarios of Lake Maggiore.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso can be reached
from Milan in just over an hour by car; on Saturdays and Sundays, during the summer, a bus service is also available from the Laveno Mombello railway station.
After leaving the car inside the square above (parking is free), you can reach the Hermitage via a dramatic staircase or using the lift at the cost of € 1 each way.
During the summer, a lake starting from Stresa, on the opposite shore, can reach the Hermitage.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina was founded by a wealthy merchant, Alberto Besozzi, who, in the middle of a shipwreck, entrusted himself to Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, taking a vow of penance if he was saved. The merchant saved himself by clinging to rocks, and there he withdrew, as promised, to be a hermit: in that place now stands the Hermitage.
Admission is free for both pilgrims and tourists. Be sure to visit this beautiful place, overlooking one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
