Four miracles attributed to the Saint: the miracle of the beans, the child returned by the wolf, the transformation of the greedy's fish into snakes, and the boy who fell from the oak tree... #tuttitaly
In the Sagittario Valley, on the shore of the lake of San Domenico, there is a small church known as "The Hermitage of San Domenico."
Initially, there was only a cave stone rock where the Saint lived around 1000. It was precisely in this place that he could find the peace he sought. But the hermitage was built in the 15th century when the cult of San Domenico spread.
The current church has an eighteenth-century hut-like appearance. It is accessed through an entrance with four large paintings from 1938, works by Alfredo Gentili. These depict scenes from the saint's life and narrate some miracles attributed to him. Inside there is a neo-Gothic altar that houses the statue of the saint.
The church is the destination, every August 21, of pilgrimage strictly on foot by the faithful of Fornelli in the province of Isernia. They leave at 10 pm on 19 August from the Chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie in Fornelli and walk 80 km to Villalago.
The millenary erosion of the waters of the Sagittario River has created a spectacular canyon between limestone cliffs, where bears, wolves, and hawks find refuge.
This nature reserve is a WWF oasis to be discovered strictly on foot.
The gorges begin near the San Domenico dam. The protected area covers an area of about 450 hectares. It ranges from an altitude of 500 meters downstream of the town up to a height of 1,500 in Pizzo Marcello, which borders the Abruzzo National Park.
