Ghivizzano is an ancient village in the middle Serchio Valley in the province of Lucca, about 82 km from Bologna airport (BLQ), the closest.

History

The first written document in which the village is named is dated 983 when the bishop of Lucca leased the castle of Ghivizzano to the Ronaldinghi family. Subsequently, the town ends up under the jurisdiction of the Antelminellis, to whom we owe the city's current structure.

What to see

The entrance to the town is given by an arched door, from which the via Piastronata winds lead to the center, and the via Sossala, a long walkway that develops under the buildings that were part of the palace (hence the name "Sub Sala"). On the lower side, the old openings used by the soldiers as loopholes have been transformed into windows, from which we can admire the beautiful panorama over the valley.

The walk through the streets of this charming village is

suggestive. We arrive at a long staircase leading to the church's entrance dedicated to the SS. Peter and Paul, and the Tower.

The church of SS. Pietro e Paolo was built to become the new parish church of the town, given that the parish church dedicated to Sant'Antonio Abate was not large enough to contain all the faithful of the expanding village.

In the Parish church of SS. Peter and Paul have preserved

paintings of excellent artistry and an ancient tabernacle. In the Oratory of Sant'Antonio, the ambo of a pulpit and the 15th-century baptismal font are well maintained.

The square-shaped tower, 25 m high, consists of three floors: the ground floor, which did not communicate with the upper floors, was used as a war warehouse; the other two were divided as follows:

the lower floor was used as a living area, the upper one as a sleeping area.

Events

Norcini a Castello is the event that takes place every year in September, during which you can taste the typical dishes of the tradition and attend medieval shows and reproductions.
