The name of the town is of Greek origin and derives from "Jerax", which means "vulture". It certainly refers to its ancient origins as a fortified place flown over by birds of prey. Today it presents itself as a village with a very ancient history. Over the centuries, different dominations have come and gone and each has left architectural and cultural evidence whose legacy we can still admire today... #tuttitaly
Immersed in the beauty of the Madonie Mountains, just 114 km from Palermo, Geraci Siculo represents a journey through time with its traditions and ancient history.
Origins
The origins of Geraci Siculo date back to ancient times, with traces of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. However, the first certain records of the settlement date back to 840, the year of the island's conquest by the Saracens, who helped expand and fortify the castle in the area. This dominion has left a profound impact on the history of Geraci and Sicily, still evident today in the cultural testimonies present in the village.
What to see
To enter the heart of the village, you need to walk along Via Biscucco, through picturesque alleys and streets that lead to the remains of the castle, probably of Byzantine origin and later transformed into a military fortress by the Ventimiglia family. Near the castle, you will find the ancient Church of Sant'Anna, linked to the tradition of the skull of St. Anne, and the evocative Church of San Giacomo, guardian of precious works dating back to different periods.
In Piazza del Popolo, you can visit the majestic Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, a real treasure trove of art, containing valuable paintings and sculptures of great artistic value. Inside, the marble statues of the Madonna della Neve and the Madonna della Mercede stand out, as well as the 15th-century Baptismal Font and the Monumental Wooden Choir of 1650, crafted by the famous Gagini workshop.
The visit to the church ideally concludes with the discovery of the artistic "treasure" kept in the crypt, made up of golden and silver liturgical furnishings and splendid finely embroidered vestments.
Geraci Siculo is therefore a place steeped in history and art, where ancient traditions harmoniously blend with the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, offering the visitor an unforgettable experience and a journey through time in the heart of Sicily.
