Genga (AN) - Church of Santa Maria Assunta and Museum of Sacred Art of the Castle - Marche

Genga is an Italian town of 1690 inhabitants in the province of Ancona. Here originated the homonymous family to which Pope Leo XII belonged. It is also a spa center, nature reserve, and an area of speleo-karst interest with the Frasassi Caves.

We are in the heart of the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park. An uphill path of about 700 m takes us to one of the fascinating places: the Temple of Valadier.

The Sanctuary, in neoclassical style, was built around 1830 by Pope Leo XII, a native of Genga, on the project of the famous architect Valadier. Octagonal in shape, built in white travertine, set in the rock that almost touches with its lead dome, the Temple is simple inside. On the altar, we find the Statue of the Madonna and Child, made in white Carrara marble by Antonio Canova.

Next to the Valadier Temple: the small Sanctuary of the Madonna di Frasassi partly dug out of the living rock.

Gastronomy

Don't miss the ciauscolo, a fresh cured meat from the Marche peasant tradition made with shoulder, bacon, ham, and loin.
