The Fortress and the beach of Le Castella are one of the main tourist attractions in Calabria, located in the fraction of Isola di Capo Rizzuto in the province of Crotone.

The Fortress of Le Castella is an imposing fortified structure on a small island connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land. Its strategic position, surrounded by the sea, makes it a place of great charm and suggestion.

Origin of the name

According to historical sources, the plural name "Le Castella" could indicate the presence of several fortified islets, all close to each other. It is said that seven castles stood along the gulf, but for various reasons, still unknown today, they were swallowed by the sea. This theory is supported by some archaeological finds discovered in the surrounding waters.

Description of the fortress

The Fortress of Le Castella, as we see it today, dates back to the Aragonese period when it was built to defend the coast from pirate raids. Its pentagonal shape, with angular towers and a central keep, testifies to its defensive function.

Inside the majestic fortress are the remains of an ancient urban settlement, a small village with characteristic shops, and the ruins of a chapel called Cappella del Borgo, built during the Aragonese era.

Le Castella Beach

In addition to the Fortress, Le Castella Beach is another highly appreciated visitor attraction. Characterized by crystal-clear waters and golden sand, the beach offers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sun. Furthermore, thanks to the fortified islet, it is possible to take suggestive walks along the perimeter of the Fortress, admiring the surrounding panorama.

Nearby attractions

The Le Castella area also offers other tourist attractions, such as the Marine Reserve of Capo Rizzuto, which is one of the largest in Europe, and the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna, where you can admire the remains of the Temple of Hera Lacinia.
