On the slopes of Montedoro, in the province of Salerno, stands Eboli, an Italian town of 38,478 inhabitants.
The 90% flat territory comprises the alluvial plain of the Sele River, which delimits the region to the south, and a remaining hilly-mountainous part that falls within the Monti Picentini regional park.
A Neolithic mummy was found in the Corno d'Oro area, testifying to the presence of the territory since prehistoric times.
In the historical center, a plaque recalls the hospitality a local family granted to Giuseppe Garibaldi at the time of the struggles for the unification of Italy.
Furthermore, in Eboli, in 1954, the painting by Caravaggio depicting the martyrdom of Sant'Orsola was found. The picture was then purchased by the Italian Commercial Bank, which keeps it in Naples.
In 1980 the terrible earthquake in Irpinia caused the collapse of buildings and the damage of schools, whose reconstruction was only completed in the late 1990s.
In addition to being among the main production centers of buffalo mozzarella from Campania PDO, the Ebolitano area constitutes the most considerable portion of the Sele Plain.
However, the city is known mainly thanks to the book by Carlo Levi, "Christ Stopped at Eboli," although the opera events were set in Basilicata during the fascist regime.
