The Cross is a sculpture by Josef Bernardi, an artist specializing in crucifixes whose work is located on the top of the mountain, most loved by the residents of Ortisei. Over the years, it has become an important symbol for hundreds of hikers and faithful.
When, on 3 July 2011, Christ on the Cross is beheaded by lightning, the artist immediately gives another one.
So, shortly after, it is put back in place on the summit of Alpe del Seceda, at 2,518 meters above sea level. About a hundred people, including tourists and residents, attended the arrangement of the new sculpture by Josef Bernardi - a cross in larch measuring 8 meters and the Christ in birch measuring 2 meters and 70 centimeters - who also took part in the small officiated ceremony of the parish priest of Santa Cristina, Raimund Perathoner, and the subsequent blessing.
At the top of Seceda (2,519 m a.s.l.), you will be overwhelmed by the panoramic view of Val Gardena. You will see Ortisei and the Alpe Rasciesa, on the opposite side the Alpe di Siusi, the Sassolungo and the Sasso Piatto, the Sella, the Odle and Puez Group, and also the Val di Funes with the Odle di Eores and the Sass de Putia.
