Cornello dei Tasso and Church (BG) -Most beautiful villages in Italy -Brembana Valley - Lombardy

Cornello dei Tasso is a charming medieval village located in the province of Bergamo. It was an important trading center along the Via Mercatorum during the Middle Ages. Today, it still retains its original urban structure.

The village is built on four levels. In the lower part, there are fortified buildings overlooking the Brembo River. On the upper level, there is a covered porticoed street with stone arches and cobblestone pavement, considered the jewel of the village. Under the porticoes, there are entrances to the buildings on the lower level, while shops and stables overlook the mountain.

The third level is dedicated to housing and includes both simple buildings and palaces of architectural interest. The Church stands at the top of the village, with a Romanesque bell tower and frescoes dating back to the 15th-16th century.

Cornello is linked to the Tasso family, known for managing the postal service between the Habsburg territories and other European states for centuries.

The Tasso family was called "masters of the post." First on foot, then on horseback, with relays and stagecoaches, they managed to obtain the management of the postal service first in the Republic of Venice, then in the Papal States, the State of Milan, and in all the European territories dominated by the Habsburg Empire. Today, this is demonstrated by the Tasso and Postal History Museum.

Furthermore, the Tasso family gave birth to influential writers such as Bernardo Tasso and Torquato Tasso, author of "Jerusalem Delivered."
