Etruscans and Romans lived here and built large farms called Villae... #tuttitaly
Corciano, an enchanting village located among the Umbrian hills, has been included among the most beautiful villages in Italy. The ancient walls, the picturesque houses, the charming alleys, and the charming little squares create a unique atmosphere, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the classic medieval atmosphere.
Background
Corciano is rich in history and evidence of the ancient presence of the Etruscans and Romans. During the Etruscan period, the area was inhabited by populations mainly dedicated to agriculture and livestock farming.
Subsequently, during the Roman era, Corciano became an important agricultural center. The Romans built numerous villas, called "Villae," which were large agricultural companies equipped with stately residences. These villas were characterized by largely cultivated lands, livestock farms, and facilities for processing agricultural products.
Tourist attractions
One of Corciano's treasures is the Town Hall, a historic building that dates back to the 16th century. This residence of the Della Corgna dukes is adorned with splendid decorations on the wooden ceiling of the Council Room, created by the Zuccari school.
Continuing to walk through the charming alleys, you reach the oldest part of the town, where the main monuments are located. Among these are the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, built in the 15th century with stone and brick, and the Palazzo dei Priori, also known as Palazzo della Mercanzia, dating back to the 15th century. The latter was used as a city market, under the loggia, and for public meetings on the upper floor.
Continuing towards Piazza Coragino, you can admire a circular well dating back to the end of the 15th century, on which the municipal coat of arms is carved. Finally, we highlight the Palazzo della Corgna, which currently houses the municipal administration.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a jewel of great historical and artistic interest. Built-in the 13th century, it houses a work by the famous painter Perugino, called "l'Assunta", created in 1513. This painting is considered an artistic marvel.
Furthermore, the church also houses a Banner from 1472, created by Benedetto Bonfigli. This banner was initially present in the Church of Sant'Agostino but was subsequently transferred to the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Another church worth a visit is that of San Cristoforo, built-in 1537. This place of worship stands on an ancient chapel from the Etruscan era, giving it an even deeper historical charm. Today, the church of San Cristoforo houses the Museo della Pievania, which houses a collection of works of art and historical artifacts.
Gastronomy
You can't leave Corciano without tasting palombaccio alla ghiotta, a traditional local dish. This delicious skewer, carefully prepared and slowly cooked, is flavored with an irresistible sauce. A culinary experience that will leave you with an unforgettable memory of Corciano.
