A treasure trove of natural beauty and historical heritage, Comacchio is a small town nestled between land and water. Its seven beaches are the ideal destination for a family vacation or a weekend of relaxation in the sun.
Comacchio is a truly unique place, often called "Little Venice", yet it has a soul all its own, tied to the water and the traditions of the valleys.
The symbol of the city is the Trepponti Bridge (or Pallotta Bridge). It is unique in the world because it connects five different roads (three canals and two land routes) with five spectacular stairways. It was built in 1634 not only as a passageway, but also as a fortified gateway to the city.
A stroll along the Loggiato dei Cappuccini, the longest in Italy, is enchanting, as is a boat trip through the Comacchio lagoons.
Comacchio's typical flat-bottomed boats are called batane. They are long and narrow, perfect for gliding through the city's shallow canals and lagoons.
You can also visit the city by boat, on the characteristic "batane," moored in the shadow of the Trepponti Bridge.
Just like Venice, Comacchio sits on an archipelago. It is built on 13 small islands connected by a dense network of canals and terracotta bridges, which follow the natural contours of the surrounding valleys.
Eels reign supreme. Fishing in the valleys is still practiced with the lavoriero, an ingenious system of grids and basins that exploit the tides. The "Manifattura dei Marinati" is the ancient factory (now a museum) where eels are still roasted and preserved according to a centuries-old recipe.
On the table
The appetizers based on scallops, mantis shrimps, and clams are delicious; among the first courses - are seafood risotto and spaghetti with shellfish. The grilled eels with polenta are exquisite, with sole, turbot, and stuffed cuttlefish.
