Its basements are made of rooms and cisterns to collect rainwater... #tuttitaly
Citerna, an enchanting medieval village located in northern Umbria, is a place that transports you back in time. Imagine walking through its cobbled streets, surrounded by ancient walls that tell stories of domination and conquests.
Tourist attractions
You can admire a breathtaking view from the terrace of the Rocca, a fortress of Lombard origin. From which the Tiber rises, Monte della Verna and Monte Fumaiolo rise majestically in front of you. Following the course of the river, you can see the charming village of San Sepolcro and the other centers of the Upper Tiber.
In the historic center of Citerna, there are treasures to discover. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo houses a Crucifixion on a panel by Nicolò Circignani, known as Pomarancio. Palazzo Vitelli, dating back to the fifteenth century, will amaze you with its furnishings. The Church of San Francesco, however, houses essential works, such as a Deposition by Pomarancio, paintings attributed to Raffaellino del Colle, and frescoes from the workshop of Luca Signorelli.
Cisterns and Cluster Halls
Since the hill on which Citerna stood had no natural water sources, large underground cisterns were built to collect rainwater. Next to them, the "Sale degli Ammassi" were created. These rooms were used to store grain and ensure food self-sufficiency during times of need.
The rooms of the "Ammassi" are characterized by brick columns and barrel vaults with crossed arches, which give them a very suggestive and characteristic appearance.
These underground spaces represent an important historical and architectural heritage of the village of Citerna, testimony to its history and its survival needs over the centuries.
Gastronomy
Citerna will also delight you with its traditional cuisine. The homemade tagliatelle seasoned with goose sauce is a dish to try absolutely. The truffle crostini and those with chicken innards will make your mouth water. You can't miss the grilled fillet and Chianina steak if you are a meat lover.
And to end on a sweet note, Carnival's torcolo and "briachi" crostini will give you an explosion of flavors.
Conclusion
Citerna is a place that will enchant you with its history, its art, and its cuisine. I can't wait to discover what fascinates you most about this wonderful medieval village!😉
