Church of the SS. Crucifix - San Miniato (PI) - Tuscany

The Church of the Holy Crucifix in San Miniato, Tuscany, is a place of worship that has recently restored all its splendor. With an expense of 383,820 euros, this wonderful religious building has returned to shine. During the restoration, a curious detail was discovered: in the attic of the church, for several years, pigeons had made their nest and had deposited over 7 tons of guano. Cleaning the attic from this organic waste was not easy at all!

The Church and Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix is a religious building designed by architect Ferri and dates back to the 18th century. It is located in a suggestive position, on a steep slope below the Rocca di Federico, and is connected to the Town Hall by a scenic staircase.

A sober and harmonious decoration characterizes the church's exterior, while the interior has a Greek cross plan. The walls are entirely frescoed with scenes from the life of Christ, creating a spiritual and engaging atmosphere.

The church dome is decorated with a fresco depicting the Ascension, created by Antonio Domenico Bamberini. On the other hand, the pillars of the church represent four episodes from the Old Testament, further enriching the visual experience of the faithful.

At the main altar is an urn closed by a panel depicting the Resurrected Christ, painted by Francesco Lanfranchi in 1525. This urn houses the 11th-century Crucifix, coming from Castelvecchio, which is the object of great devotion by the faithful, as it is considered miraculous. According to legend, two travelers abandoned the Crucifix in San Miniato but saved the city from the plague in 1628. Following this miracle, the bishop decided to build a new Sanctuary to preserve and venerate the sacred image of the Crucifix.

The Church of the Holy Crucifix in San Miniato is a place of worship and an artistic and historical treasure that deserves to be visited and admired by all those who appreciate beauty and spirituality.
