The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Gaibola is a parish church whose construction is traditionally traced back to the eighth century, in the middle of the Longobard age. However, the first news documenting the certainty of the church's existence dates back only to 1221.
Over the centuries, the church was restored several times; in the mid-seventeenth century, it was erected as a parish church and performed the function of administrative control over all the churches in the surrounding suburb.
Under the Church of San Michele Arcangelo is the Grotta della Gaibola, in whose cavities an underground stream flows, whose waters come from the Fontanino, one of the few karst resurgences still visible in the Bolognese chalk district.
