The Church of San Francesco is the principal Franciscan church in the territory of Volterra. Built in the 13th century, it is a sizeable single-nave church with three choir chapels. The buildings of the Franciscan convent were located around the church, which today have become civilian residences. The church follows the typical architectural style of Franciscan churches, characterized by simplicity and its position on the outskirts of the medieval settlement.
Chapel of the Cross
The Chapel of the Cross, built in the 14th century, is adjacent to the Church of San Francesco. It is decorated with frescoes by Cenni di ser Cenni from Florence in 1410. In the room adjacent to the church is a group of four colored glazed terracotta figures by Zaccaria Zacchi.
Church of San Lino
The Church of San Lino, built in 1480, is dedicated to the second Pope of Christianity. It is a single-nave church with an austere facade. Inside are valuable works of art, including paintings by Cosimo Daddi and Cesare Dandini. On the main altar is a panel by Curradi depicting the Virgin Mary, San Lino, and other saints.
The church also houses the tomb of the founder Raffaello Maffei, made of Carrara marble by Silvio Cosini and with a statue by Mino da Fiesole.
