Little Venice, which considers Venice the Great Chioggia and which preserves the oldest clock in the world... #tuttitaly
Chioggia was born as a town of fishermen and farmers. The peasants are descended from Genoese prisoners of war. The latter has been confined to the mainland, so they do not steal the fishing secrets in the lagoon. The lagoon has waters that not everyone knows how to navigate. Only the fishermen from Chioggia know where to fish and how to tame the waves.
THE ORIGINS
The name Chioggia derives from Cluza, "artificially built." This name is due to the island-lagoon nature of the city, which the waters would have submerged at every high tide without human modification.
Looking at the historic center of Chioggia from above, you will notice that it is shaped like a fishbone. This structure resembles Roman settlements, with a main course, Corso del Popolo, and 72 side streets.
CURIOSITY
Did you know you will find the oldest clock in the world in Chioggia? Well yes!
Even if today the mechanisms are modern, inside the Sant'Andrea tower, we still find the authentic gears!
ADVICE
When you go to visit Chioggia, don't miss the boat tour. With the background music of Frank Sinatra, a romantic atmosphere is created in the middle of the sea, alternating, however, with the history of Chioggia told by the tour guide.
CONCLUSION
We went to visit Chioggia, convinced that it was little Venice. Before returning, we discovered that its inhabitants consider Venice the great Chioggia 😊 Why? Because Chioggia is older than Venice 😉
