At the foot of Mount Falerzio stands Cetara, a pretty village famous for its anchovy sauce and delicious tuna caught offshore from the traditional tuna traps. Cetara is the ideal destination for those who want to taste the best fish on the Amalfi Coast.
Cetara has one of the actual tuna fleets in the Mediterranean and boasts close contacts with Nemour in Algeria and with Séte and Marseilles in France, where numerous descendants of Cetara operate, who settled in the first and second post-war to carry out their fishing activity.
Tourist attractions
The settlement on the sea and the side hills began to develop in 988 around the Church of San Pietro.
The Church of San Pietro, with its majolica dome, symbolizes the village of Cetara. Inside, among the statues, the wooden bust of St. Peter stands out, carried in procession through the town streets during the patronal feast on 29 June.
The town's main beach is Marina di Cetara, a peaceful place to swim in the clear sea.
At the foot of Marina di Cetara stands the Torre Vicereale, dating back to the 14th century. It was built for defensive purposes against Turkish attacks.
The building is now home to the Civic Museum of Cetara, where you can admire paintings of beautiful landscapes of the Amalfi coast.
In the tower's lower rooms, the Museum-Cellar is dedicated to the anchovy sauce. Here are kept ancient barrels where the liquid obtained from the maceration of anchovies preserved in salt for six or nine months is stored and left to age.
Typical product
Colatura di alici, produced in the small seaside village of Cetara, is used as a condiment for spaghetti and to flavor fish or vegetable dishes.
