Cesena (FC) - UNESCO heritage - Emilia Romagna

Cesena, a Malatesta city, is located right in the center of Romagna - between Ravenna, Forlì, the Adriatic Sea, and the Apennine ridge.

Cesena is one of the most important art destinations in Romagna. At the end of the fourteenth century the city became a lordship with the Malatesta family, and reached its splendor with the establishment of the Malatestiana Library.

What to see

The Malatesta Library, which has remained practically unchanged since its inauguration in 1454, is the first Civic Library in Italy.

Founded in 1452 by the will of the lord of Cesena Malatesta

Novello, it was recognized in 2005 as the "memory of the world" by UNESCO for the value of the architectural structure and the codes preserved in it. The Piana Library, owned by Pope Pius VII, is in front of the Sala del Nuti and houses 15 splendid choirs.

The Malatesta Fortress, one of the most impressive in Romagna, is visible from its terraces, with the courtyard and two central towers: the male and the female.

You can visit the path along the walkways inside the walls, the ancient prisons, the exhibition of jousting weapons, and the Agricultural Museum.

The thousand-year-old Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte is famous for the homonymous Basilica, which houses the critical collection of ex-votos and the ancient book restoration laboratory.

The Villa Silvia-Carducci hosts "Musicalia," the only museum in Italy dedicated to mechanical music.

The villa was the habitual residence of the poet and Nobel laureate Giosuè Carducci, whose personal room remains intact and can be visited.

A walk along the streets of the historic center leads us to admire Piazza del Popolo with its jewel of the Mannerist age - the Masini fountain; Palazzo del Ridotto, dominated by the bronze statue of Pope Pius VI; the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista with the Chapel of the Madonna del Popolo and the Cathedral Museum; "Alessandro Bonci" theater, a true neoclassical jewel.

Do not miss the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Municipal Art Gallery, the Archaeological Museum, and the Museum of Centuriation.

Gastronomy

The typical cuisine of Cesena includes first cappelletti in broth. You can also taste the brodetto, the cuttlefish with peas, the paganelli broth, the stewed boratelli, the mofrigoli in cuttlefish broth, the bad ones of the cat, the grilled saraghina, the sardoni, the mantis shrimp.
