The steppe climate is less affected by the effect of the sea... #UNESCO #tuttitaly

Central Sicily (EN) - Val di Noto - UNESCO World Heritage Site

I went through Central Sicily along the A19 motorway that leads from Catania to Agrigento through the provinces of Enna and Caltanissetta.

A truly unique area that is worth showing you. Central Sicily is characterized by a very particular climate, which you can find only in some inland areas of Spain: the climatic variations pass from the steppe climate to the Mediterranean climate, which is less affected by the influence of the sea.

It was August, and the sun was hot and persistent; around an arid and steppe land, many animals were grazing in search of a few blades of grass, but only dry grass. I remember many cows seeking shelter from the sun by lying on the sides of the ditches of roads or bridges. Others instead tried to drink in the few streams now dried up by the sun. An almost lunar landscape is very different from the coasts but equally fascinating.

I take this opportunity to introduce you to some curiosities or records about Sicily in this post:

- It is the largest region of Italy. - Plastic surgery was born in Catania in 1400. - There is the largest marine protected area in Europe - It is the most populated island in the whole Mediterranean. - It has 7 UNESCO sites, with Italian primacy with Tuscany. - The 1st Parliament in the World was born in the Kingdom of Sicily.

- Sicily is responsible for the origin of spaghetti. - Sicily boasts the oldest flag in the world. - The first Jazz record recorded in New York was by a Sicilian. - Sicily holds the record for the variety of climates. - Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. - Here is the oldest wooden cross in the world.
