The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Cecilia is Cagliari's principal place of worship. It is located in the fortified heart of the city's historic center.
The church was built during the thirteenth century in the Pisan Romanesque style. Over the centuries, it underwent several alterations. In the thirties of the twentieth century, the church's facade was raised neo-Romanesque.
Today, the Duomo is one of the most visited monuments in Cagliari. The various styles that have enriched it over the years deserve attention.
The building is visible from afar thanks to the high octagonal dome, the fourteenth-century tower of San Pancrazio, and the Torre dell'Elefante.
The interior, with three naves, is embellished with a polychrome marble inlay floor.
The Dormitio Virginis
In the Cathedral, the cult of the Assumption merges with that of the Dormition of Mary. In the days preceding August 15 and throughout the following week, the simulacrum of the Virgin Mary depicted asleep is placed on a catafalque decorated with ten golden angels in the central nave to be venerated by the faithful.
