The Cathedral of San Pietro in Modica, located in the province of Ragusa and included in the UNESCO Heritage Site, represents a perfect synthesis of frescoes, cultures, and decorations.
After the earthquake of 1693, the church was restored. It now presents a refined facade divided into two orders and embellished with statues of San Cataldo, Santa Rosalia, San Pietro, and the Madonna. The monumental staircase, enriched with statues of the 12 apostles, gives the entrance of the building an imposing majesty.
Inside, the three aisles with Corinthian columns, a floor from 1871 decorated with inlays of white and polychrome marble, and a sumptuous vault rich in frescoes from the Old and New Testament, created by Gian Battista Ragazzi and his son Stefano in the 18th century, offer an extraordinary artistic spectacle.
Among the works present, you can admire the "Madonna di Trapani" by Francesco Laurana and the polychrome sculptural group "San Pietro e il paralitico" by Benedetto Civiletti. Furthermore, the monumental organ of the building, built by the Polizzi brothers and inaugurated in 1924, counts as many as 3200 pipes and 32 registers, adding prestige to this extraordinary work of art.
