Cathedral of San Giorgio - Modica (RG) - UNESCO Heritage- Noto Valley - Sicily

The Duomo of San Giorgio in Modica is an elaborate monument of great splendor, symbolizing the artistic and historical richness of the Sicilian city. Built in the 18th century after the devastating earthquakes that struck the area, the cathedral is a masterpiece of Sicilian baroque architecture.

Designed by the architect Rosario Gagliardi, the Duomo is an imposing structure with five naves and Corinthian columns. Inside, precious works of art, including paintings by renowned artists such as Girolamo Alibrandi and Filippo Paladini, can be admired.

The church is dedicated to the martyrs St. George and St. Hippolytus and houses sacred relics, such as the "Holy Ark" covered in silver. One of its peculiarities is a monumental organ built in the 19th century, with four keyboards and 3000 pipes, fully functional and of great artistic value. The bold tower facade of the cathedral rises above a majestic staircase of 250 steps.

A noteworthy curiosity is the sundial on the floor inside the cathedral. At noon, a ray of sunlight passes through a hole on the right side of the sundial, thus marking local noon. This unusual phenomenon is a testament to the ancient builders' attention to detail and precision.

The Duomo of San Giorgio in Modica is a place of great charm and historical importance. It encapsulates centuries of art and culture. Visiting this magnificent church allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and spirituality that characterize Sicily and the city of Modica.
