Castle of Bovino and Co-Cathedral of S. Maria- Bovino (FG)- Most beautiful villages in Italy- Puglia

The Ducal Castle of Bovino is a historically significant monument for the city. Built on ancient Roman ruins, various illustrious figures reconstructed and expanded the castle over the centuries. Its cylindrical tower, the only remaining evidence of the original Norman construction, stands majestically on the truncated pyramidal spur, dominating the entire structure. Inside the castle, there is a charming courtyard enriched by the presence of the Clock Tower and the Ducal Palace. The palace chapel houses a valuable silver shrine containing a thorn fragment from the crown of Jesus and other sacred relics.

Next to the Ducal Palace, at a lower level, is the hanging garden, an oasis of beauty and tranquility. Here, among plants and shrubs of various varieties, one can admire battlemented walls and sections of Roman opus. The garden is adorned with female statues, busts, and fountains, creating a magical and evocative atmosphere.

Bovino Cathedral

The Basilica Cathedral of Bovino, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is another architectural gem in the city's historic center.

Built in the 13th century, the basilica features a typical "a capanna" facade of Apulian cathedrals. Three entrance portals lead inside, with the main portal standing for its size and a pointed arch decorated with vegetal elements. The upper part of the facade is embellished with a majestic, richly decorated rose window, with the figure of Christ Pantocrator in the center.

The basilica's interior, with three aisles, creates a solemn and evocative atmosphere.

Completing the structure is the bell tower, an imposing testimony of the early medieval period. Over the centuries, the basilica has hosted prominent figures, making it a place of great historical and cultural importance.
