It was a Roman Castrum before being set up in the Middle Ages. The coat of arms has the lion on a red and white background of the Republic of Lucca, of which Castiglione was the most critical fortress in defense of the border with the Duchy of Modena... #tuttitaly
Castiglione di Garfagnana dates back to Roman times, who installed a primitive Castrum here. In 1806, with the Napoleonic conquests, Castiglione was assigned to the principality of Lucca. The town's coat of arms bears the lion on the red and white background of the Republic of Lucca.
The entire town of Castiglione comprises the medieval fortress, which has remained intact over the centuries. The Rocca still shows itself today in its ancient splendor.
Around 1000, two churches were built inside the village: San Pietro and San Michele.
Also noteworthy is the Parco della Rimembranza, which
allows access to the majestic Torrione della Brunella, a point from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley. In the summer, visiting the prisons inside the tower is possible.
Events
The village is visited for numerous historical re-enactments, medieval costume festivals at the end of August, and the Procession of the Crucifixes. This sacred representation retraces Jesus' ascent to Mount Calvary, which takes place on the night of Holy Thursday.
The Feast of the Gift, an ancient tradition repeated since 1631, takes place on the first Sunday of the new year: a child from Castiglione is chosen to bring the gift to Our Lady of the Rosary and the Child Jesus.
The Festa del Carmine is celebrated on Sunday closest to July 16, the date on which the Madonna del Carmelo is remembered: the celebration takes place in the church of San Pietro, and every three years, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession through the streets of the village.
