Castelnuovo di Porto (RM) - Rocca Colonna and Parishes - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Rome - Lazio

Castelnuovo di Porto is a charming village on a ridge with a breathtaking panoramic countryside view. The oldest part of the village has uncertain origins, but the name suggests the reconstruction of a "new castle" on a pre-existing site.

Places to visit

The village developed around the castle, maintaining its medieval layout with characteristic houses that follow each other in concentric circles up to the top of the hill.

In the 15th century, the Colonna family took control of the village and fortified the perimeter with mighty walls. The fortified fortress was transformed into an elegant Renaissance palace. Inside, you can find the chapel of the ancient church of San Silvestro in Castello, decorated with 14th-century frescoes.

In the historic center, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is accompanied by the 13th-century bell tower. The Collegiate Church was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1753-56 and houses the Triptych of the Savior from 1501.

Nature

Castelnuovo di Porto is in the Veio Regional Park, which preserves biodiversity in areas profoundly transformed by humans. The surrounding landscape is characterized by cultivated fields and woods, with trees such as oak, holm oak, field maple, and black poplar. You can observe the kite, the kestrel, the woodpecker, and the hedgehog among the animals.

Within the park, you will find the ruins of Belmonte, a fortified medieval village with a majestic tower. From here, you can admire the Tiber Valley, where the Roman tuff quarries used to build the city of Rome are still located.

Conclusion

Castelnuovo di Porto is rich in history, art, and natural beauty, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a medieval atmosphere and enjoy breathtaking views of the Roman countryside.
