On the left bank of the Secchia River, at the foot of the Reggio Apennines, stands Castellarano, a small village surrounded by natural beauty and breathtaking views.
The Rock
The village tour starts from the Rocchetta, a complex construction surrounded on three sides by a moat, with three towers: Torre Levatoia, Torre Cappellana, and Torre della Rosa.
Torre della Rosa is the oldest and bears a sculpted coat of arms of the Este family, with the Strozzi coat of arms after it, which traces the structure back to the 15th century.
Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The fulcrum of the ancient village is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to 898. Four columns with capitals remain of the old pre-Romanesque parish church.
Today, we can see a late Baroque-style building from the 18th century.
The castle
Next to the church, beyond the moat, we can admire the Castle.
The structure, built to protect the Rocchetta, was later transformed into a stately residence.
The castle was inhabited first by Bonifacio di Canossa, then by the Estensi. With Napoleon, the building became the property of the Casali family, who still reside there today after its reconstruction, which was seriously damaged in the Second World War.
The towers
Next to the Castle is the ancient 10th-century Tower, and on the square in front of the Rocca, you can see the 15th-century Clock Tower, built by the Este family to control the transit of men and goods along the Secchia.
