Castelfranco Veneto (TV) - Cathedral and Parish of Santa Maria - Veneto

Castelfranco Veneto, located in central Veneto, is a city rich in history and culture. Its Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Liberale is one of the main places of worship in the town.

Cathedral and Parish of Santa Maria

Built in the 18th century according to the design of Francesco Maria Preti, it features a neoclassical style distinguished by its tripartite facade with Doric order semicolumns. The facade is embellished with pink plastered panels and three statues representing the Virgin and the Saints on the pediment. The bell tower, set back on the right side, is a brick tower with a bell-chamber opened by round-headed windows.

The cathedral's interior has a single nave with a Latin cross plan and numerous altars along the sides. Among the most important works of art are "Descent from Limbo" by Giambattista Ponchino behind the main altar, the "Death of San Severo" by Domenico Pellegrini, and the "Martyrdom of San Sebastiano" by Palma il Giovane on the sides of the apse. The two twin choirs on either side of the presbytery house the large organ by Gaetano Callido from 1784, restored in 1908 by Domenico Malvestio from Padua. The organ has two keyboards and a mechanical transmission pedalboard.

Famous Figures

Castelfranco Veneto is also famous for being the birthplace of Giorgione, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. The mysterious genius of light and color has left an indelible mark on the city. Castelfranco Veneto was the hometown of Tina Anselmi, a partisan courier, and politician, the first woman to hold a ministerial position in Italy, and Donatella Rettore, the revolutionary singer of the 80s.
