Casoli (CH) - Church of Santa Reparata and Church of San Rocco - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Abruzzo

Casoli, located in the picturesque Aventino Valley, is rich in history and culture. Thanks to the dedication of its farmers and fertile crops, it has become an essential economic and cultural center for the entire region. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Casoli was known as the "Athens of Abruzzo" due to the artistic fervor that animated its people. The Ducal Castle, frequented by illustrious figures such as Gabriele D'Annunzio and members of the Michetti circle, testifies to its historical importance.

Tourist attractions

The Ducal Castle, an ancient noble residence and strategic defense point, has undergone significant modifications and expansions over the centuries. A Gothic-Lombard structure was erected adjacent to the original tower during the Orsini period. This imposing castle is open to the public today and hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Its grandeur and rich history make it one of the main attractions in the area.

The Church of Santa Reparata, the patron saint of Casoli, stands majestically at the beginning of Corso Umberto I. Despite the damage suffered during a tragic air raid in 1943, this church retains its original layout. The facade, completely rebuilt in 1952, reflects the traditional Abruzzese style. Inside the church, a magnificent triumphal arch from 1539 leads to the altar of Santa Reparata, beautifully decorated with bas-reliefs carved in white stone.

The Parish Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, located in the heart of Casoli's historic center, has ancient origins. Derived from the palatine chapel of the Ducal Castle, it was dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta in 1455. During the 18th century, under the rule of the D'Aquino family, the church was expanded with a majestic central nave, an apse area, and a side nave. In 1868, it underwent further restoration, giving it an elegant neoclassical appearance, with a facade embellished with a double staircase.

Despite the losses suffered over the centuries, this church still preserves precious sacred furnishings and paintings of inestimable artistic value, such as the Madonna del Rosario from 1572 and the Madonna del Carmine from the second half of the 16th century.
