The Holy Stairs, in the church of San Paolo, consists of twenty-eight steps in olive wood which must always be climbed only on one's knees... #tuttitaly
Today, Campli is our obligatory stop, not only because it is now lunchtime and we are hungry but also because this center of the Teramo province is rich in history and art treasures.
Today, May 1st, we are lucky enough to enjoy the typical dish of the place, which is prepared only for this festival, "La Virtù." Tasty for the palate.
Now we can pay a visit to the village. Curiosity leads us straight to the Sanctuary of the Scala Santa. Once there, we discover that it consists of 28 steps to be climbed only on your knees. There are also pillows available for those who need them, but we prefer to choose the less straightforward way. One step at a time, when we reach the top, we feel like after a meditation session. The sensation is rewarding, and the knees are still safe.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Platea leaves us speechless, on the one hand for its beauty and on the other for the resolution of the scaffolding to preserve its value.
However, we must visit the Casa del Medico, which brings us into a unique atmosphere. It almost seems to be in a tropical place. Impressive.
The village is very characteristic and very well cared for.
It is said that, in 1764, the population of Campli was Decimated by an epidemic of typhus, and the city devoted itself to the Immaculate Conception, which was proclaimed Queen and Patroness. Suddenly the disease disappeared from the entire municipal area. In 1776 the Sanctuary of the Scala Santa was inaugurated.
