Campagna rises in a valley of the Picentini Mountains at an altitude of 270 meters above sea level. The municipality has 17 109 inhabitants, and for centuries it was the main economic, administrative, and religious center of the Sele Plain.

One of the most characteristic events of the place is A Chiena, which is repeated every year during mid-August. Traditionally, the roads are flooded by the partial deviation of the Tenza River.

An artificial course allows the water to run through the country. Many tourists do not miss this suggestive event.

For many, this event was born when, due to the seventeenth-century plague, the city had to be cleaned up; for others, the system was used to eliminate the excrement of pack animals during the summer, when the rains were scarce.

In 1889, with the restoration of the artificial canal and the paving of Corso Umberto I, the main city street, to allow the flow of river water to avoid flooding the houses, an order was issued to warn citizens of the incoming flood.

In 1982, from a design idea by Angelo Riviello, 'A Chiena was spectacularized for the first time with classical music by Vito D'Ambrosio and Gelsomino Fezza. Since then, it has become a tourist attraction event.
