Caccuri (KR) - Church of S. Maria and Castle Tower - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Calabria

Caccuri is a charming place, a maze of alleys and narrow streets that intertwine with each other. The characteristic squares open directly at the doors of the houses, creating a welcoming and familiar atmosphere. Located on a spur overlooking the Neto River, between the Sila plateau and the Ionian Sea, this place is a genuine social connector. Families and friends gather here on long summer evenings, creating bonds and unforgettable memories.

The Castle that overlooks the village offers a breathtaking panoramic view. From its walls, one can admire a landscape that ranges from olive hills to the sea and the city of Crotone, the capital.

This Castle, originally built by the Byzantines in the 6th century, aimed to protect the village from dangers from the land and the sea.

Today, the Castle represents the symbol of the power of the feudal lords who ruled Caccuri. The Ruffo family, which dominated the village in the 14th century, is particularly well-known. Princess Polissena, a member of this family, is a fascinating and tragic figure of that time.

Married to Francesco Sforza, the first Duke of Milan, she died mysteriously in 1420, along with her daughter Antonia. It is said that a relative poisoned both.

For almost two centuries, the Cavalcanti dynasty has been linked to Caccuri. This family acquired the fiefdom in the 17th century and contributed to the village's prosperity, seeking to give splendor to their history. The Castle, in particular, was transformed into an elegant patrician residence with magnificent halls, valuable furnishings, and essential architectural interventions.

Inside the Castle, there is the palatine chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara. A coffered ceiling, a central altar, and a series of paintings from the Neapolitan school characterize this place of worship.

Another point of interest is the Mastrigli Tower, built in the late 19th century. With its medieval and battlemented shape, this tower hides a water tank and offers a spectacular view of the village and its surroundings.

The Church of Santa Maria della Grazie (14th century) is also worth a visit. Located right below the Castle, this building, damaged by two earthquakes, is characterized by the stone bell tower on the right side of the facade.

Gastronomy

Caccuri also offers unique culinary pleasures. One of the typical dishes is the calzone with sardella, a sauce made from whitebait and spicy chili pepper. This is a local specialty common to the Sila area. During the Christmas period, on the other hand, it is traditional to taste the pitta 'mpigliata, a typical sweet.
