Burano (VE) - Veneto

In the northern Venetian Lagoon, northeast of Murano rises Burano, known for its brightly colored houses and the centuries-old needle lace craftsmanship.

History

Burano is mentioned for the first time in a document from 840. The first houses were placed on stilts with walls made of reeds and mud, and only later, starting from the year 1000, were brick houses built.

What to see

The heart of the town is Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, named after the well-known eighteenth-century composer.

The Church of San Martino overlooks the square, whose bell tower is characterized by a steep slope due to the partial yielding of its bases, founded on stilts.

Inside we find the Crucifixion by Tiepolo (1725).

One of the most characteristic places on the island is

crossing two canals. The distinct bridge stands connect the three districts of Burano: San Mauro, San Martino Sinistro, and Giudecca. Here the most colorful streets of the island meet, where the fishermen's houses and craft shops stand.

It is assumed that the boatmen used the bright colors of the houses to find their home in the presence of fog, particularly thick in Burano.

Typical meal

Being an island of fishermen, the typical cuisine is based on fish. To taste the risotto ai go, the spaghetti with cuttlefish ink, and the creamed cod.

The typical dessert of the island is the bussolà, made in the shape of a donut and also known as buranelli.
