They owe their name to the Sardinian name of the monk seal, which, like the cormorants, has disappeared from the area due to excessive anthropogenic pressure... #tuttitaly
The harmonious union between sea and mountains. The Grotte del Bue Marino has been one of the major attractions of the Gulf of Orosei since the 1950s.
The sea cavities were once the habitat of the monk seal, called by the population "sea ox" for its mild behavior and the sound similar to that of an ox: the mammal gave its name to this wonder of nature - which annually attracts millions of tourists.
The entrance, 3 km from the splendid Cala Luna, has two arches overlooking the sea. The marine cavities are 15 km long and divided into two branches: the north branch, which has become fossilized due to the ceased karst activity, is not accessible; the south branch can be visited thanks to equipped and illuminated paths for about 900 m.
Sea water penetrates the large gallery, and numerous freshwater lakes fed by underground rivers emerge.
The beams of light that penetrate inside create an extraordinary chromatic show.
The guided tour lasts about an hour, and the walk ends at the beach of the seals - which once stopped here to mate and give birth.
To reach the Caves, you can take a boat in the ports of Arbatax, Cala Gonone, La Caletta, Orosei, and Santa Maria Navarrese.
