At the foot of the imposing Picentini Mountains, immersed in the vast forest of southern Italy, about ten kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea, stands Battipaglia. The city is one of the leading production centers of buffalo mozzarella from Campania DOP.
The symbol and guardian of the city are the ancient Castle. Also known as Castelluccio, it is a medieval building built around the year 1000 on the commission of the Norman leader Roberto il Guiscardo.
The fortress is located on the hill overlooking the city in a strategic position from a military, political, and symbolic point of view. Currently privately owned, it can be visited for free only inaccessible areas.
The castle's structure still has walls dating back to the seventh century and a tower from the thirteenth century, and the facade has three quadrangular buildings built later.
In addition to the Castelluccio, there are also other monuments and churches. It is worth mentioning the Church of Santa Maria della Speranza, inside which there is the statue of the Madonna della Speranza, built by the Bourbons in the early nineteenth century. It is celebrated on the first Sunday of July every year. Also worth visiting is the chapel of Santa Lucia, which still infuses the suggestions of its ancient past. Today, it presents a magnificent Baroque dress supplemented by some nineteenth-century restoration.
Among the various civil architectures in Battipaglia, we remember the Town Hall, the Masseria del Fosso, the Tenuta Porta di Ferro, the Villa Budetta, the Masseria Farina di Fiorignano, the Complex la Morella, the Torre Cacciottoli, and the Villa d 'Love.
Besides the wealth of cultural and scenic attractions of Battipaglia, its beautiful beaches make it the ideal city for a fantastic holiday.
