Basilica Cathedral of the Transfiguration or Cathedral of Cefalù (PA) - UNESCO Heritage - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Sicily

King Roger II began the work in 1131 and imagined that the church would become a mausoleum for his family (which is why he had two sarcophagi placed already in 1145). In reality, he did not have time to see the end of the work, and the sovereign was buried in Palermo. Basilica Cathedral of the Transfiguration or Cathedral of Cefalù (PA) - UNESCO Heritage - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Sicily

The Cathedral of Cefalù, also known as the Basilica of the Transfiguration, is a must-see for those visiting the city. Located in the heart of the historic center, it symbolizes beauty that defies time and the influences of history. Built by request of Roger II, the first King of Sicily, in 1131, the Cathedral is an exceptional example of Norman Romanesque architecture.

The cathedral's grandeur is evident from the outside, with its two imposing Arab-Norman-style side towers rising against the Cefalù Rock. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a 15th-century porch that leads to the main facade, enriched by refined marble decoration. The cathedral's interior features a Latin cross plan, with three naves supported by granite columns.

But the true artistic treasure of the Cathedral is found in the central apse: the Byzantine mosaics executed between 1148 and 1166 by masters from Constantinople. The Christ Pantocrator stands out among the depicted figures, surrounded by the praying Madonna and archangels. The intricate details and symbolic richness of the mosaics leave visitors in awe.

Equally captivating is the recently restored 11th-century cloister, which retains part of the original structure enhanced by decorated capitals and medieval paired columns.

The Cathedral of Cefalù was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, and it is a place that narrates the history and beauty of medieval art. A visit to this majestic cathedral will not fail to stir and amaze anyone who sets foot there, providing an unforgettable experience amidst history, art, and spirituality.
