Asti is one of the most important cities of art in Piedmont, home to eighteenth-century poet and tragedian Vittorio Alfieri.
Manifestations
Asti is known for its wines, particularly Asti spumante: every year, in September, one of the most important wine competitions in Italy is held, the Douja d'Or.
In the characteristic historic center opens Piazza Alfieri, where the famous city Palio takes place in September:
one of Italy's oldest events, culminates with a race of mounted bareback horses.
What to see
Noble palaces, towers, and ancient churches stand out among the most valuable architecture, including the magnificent cathedral.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in addition to being the largest church in the region, is the most important Gothic cathedral in Piedmont.
The museums centered on rural activities are worth a visit: the Museum of Past Arts and Crafts in the Castle of Cisterna d'Asti and the Bersano Museum of Farmers and Ancient Wine Stamps in Nizza Monferrato.
