The tradition of fireworks for religious and civil celebrations has come down to our days and continues to represent an evocative moment for young and old... #tuttitaly
In the hinterland of Campania, on three high hills, stands Ariano Irpino, the most populous city in the province after Avellino. The municipality has, in fact, 21 995 inhabitants.
The historic center is of medieval origins, while on the territory, we find two archaeological sites that testify to the city's ancient roots.
You can visit the Neolithic village of "la Starza" (the oldest in Campania) and the Roman village of "Aequum Tuticum" (road junction between the Via Traiana and the Via Herculea).
The historic center is located in the highest part of the territory, on a triple hill called "Tricolle."
The Lombards founded the town, which, however, assumed considerable importance under the Normans, so much so that King Roger II held the famous "Assizes of Ariano" there (in the 12th century). It was then destroyed by the Saracens and again resurfaced with the Angevins.
At the highest point of the town's territory, there is the Norman Castle with Panoramic Gardens. It was chosen as a summer residence by King Roger II.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is of early medieval origins in Piazza Duomo. It houses many works of art from various periods.
The city also boasts various museums, including the Museum of Norman Civilization, which houses weapons and artifacts of all kinds dating back to the Middle Ages; the Civic and Ceramics Museum, which exhibits a wide range of local majolica and ceramics dating back to the 12th century; the Museo degli Argenti, which houses ancient finely worked silver works.
