On the hills north of the Calesine stream lies the grand Necropolis of Sovana, a fascinating archaeological site that tells the story of the life and beliefs of the Etruscans. This ancient cemetery, oriented to the south, stretches for about one and a half kilometers and offers an extraordinary view of cube-shaped and semi-cube-shaped tombs, some of which feature imposing columned facades and elaborate decorations.
Among the most famous tombs are the Pola Tomb and the Tomb of the Winged Demons at Poggio Prisca, the Ildebranda Tomb at Poggio Felceto, and the Tomb of the Typhon at Poggio Stanziale. The necropolis is traversed by the Via Cava, an Etruscan road carved into the tuff rock, which is currently impassable due to landslides obstructing access. This path, rich in ferns, mosses, and lichens, represents a corner of untouched nature preserved through time.
Between 2004 and 2005, excavations revealed the Tomb of the Winged Demons, a monumental structure adorned with tuff decorations and statues of winged demons, including a female figure identified as Vanth, who accompanies the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. This tomb dates back to the second half of the 3rd century BC and is characterized by a dromos that leads to a cruciform burial chamber.
The most imposing of the tombs, the Ildebranda Tomb, is named after one of the most notable citizens of Sovana, Pope Gregory VII. Although they are currently in a state of degradation, these structures once adorned a monument rich in colors and ornaments, with fluted columns and intricate reliefs that tell stories from a bygone era.
The Necropolis of Sovana is not just an archaeological site, but a journey through time that allows us to discover and appreciate the art and culture of one of the most fascinating civilizations of antiquity.
