Alfonso Vandelli Refuge - Sorapis Lake - Cortina d'Ampezzo (BL) - Veneto - Dolomites - UNESCO

The Vandelli Refuge is a success preceded by three "failures" 😅

The first Refuge was built in 1891 on the shores of Lake Sorapis. Only four years later, however, it was destroyed by an avalanche.

The following year a second shelter was built in a more sheltered position. This, too, however, in 1913, was buried by snow, ice, and boulders.

The third shelter, built in 1924, lasted for 35 years. Unfortunately, in 1959 it was canceled by a fire. And the reason for this was the use of light wood for its construction.

And here we come to 1966 when the Vandelli Refuge was completed, the name of which was dedicated to the financier of its construction, Alfonso Vandelli, the famous mountaineer of the time.

It was built entirely in local stone masonry with relevant thicknesses and designed with fire prevention measures.

Unfortunately, Alfonso Vandelli could not see his completed work because he died a year earlier.

At 150 m from the Vandelli refuge, there is a paradise in the middle of the mountains, Lake Sorapis.
