Acerenza (PZ) - Cathedral of S. Maria and S. Canio - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Basilicata

Acerenza is a charming city on a tuff cliff over 800 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the Bradano River and the Fiumarella Stream, it looks like an eagle's majestical nest in the high Acerenza. The city is a true architectural gem, with an urban structure reminiscent of medieval walled citadels.

Cathedral

The Cathedral, dating back to the 11th century, is the focal point of Acerenza. Its apse complex dominates the village's panorama, and its Romanesque portal is a true masterpiece. The detailed sculptures depict biblical scenes and fantastic creatures, creating a suggestive and mysterious effect.

To fully appreciate the cathedral's beauty, walking around it and observing the ancient stone walls, apses, and turrets is necessary. Along the way, you can discover numerous hidden treasures, such as Roman marble, sculptures of funerary tombstones, and columns of Greek craftsmanship.

But it is at sunset that the cathedral reveals its true beauty. The sun's rays pass through the rose window and illuminate the high altar with intense light, creating a magical and evocative atmosphere.

Crypt of San Canio

The Crypt of San Canio is another gem of the Cathedral. The crypt is a masterpiece of Southern Renaissance art, a testament to the sensitivity and mastery of the local artists of the time. Every visit to this crypt is a unique and unforgettable experience, where you can admire the beauty and richness of ancient and precious art.

Visit to the village

After visiting the cathedral, you can take a short detour to admire the 16th-century palace of the former Pretura, with its beautiful Mediterranean Romanesque architecture.

This historic building now houses a museum and offers a panoramic city view.

Continuing the walk through the narrow streets of the historic center, you can admire the 18th-century noble palaces with their stone doorways decorated with sculptures or coats of arms of ancient Acerenza families. One of the most beautiful palaces is the Palazzo Gala, with a cornice and Romanesque portals in carved stone.

In front of it is the noble chapel of San Vincenzo, with a vaulted ceiling decorated with stucco dating back to the 18th century.

Finally, you can visit the Palazzo della Curia Vecchia, which occupies part of the premises of the ancient Lombard-Norman-Swabian castle. This palace, partially rebuilt in the 1950s, overlooks Largo Gianturco and is another example of historical architecture that testifies to Acerenza's rich history.

Typical Sweet

The "u pastezz," a typical sweet from Acerenza, is a traditional specialty prepared during Christmas. It is a delicious pie made with shortcrust pastry filled with a tasty mixture of walnuts, almonds, honey, dark chocolate, and spices such as cinnamon and cloves.

The "u pastezz" tradition dates back to ancient times and is passed down from generation to generation.
