Abbey Sant'Antimo-Castelnuovo dell'Abate-Montalcino(SI)- Val d'Orcia- UNESCO World Heritage- Tuscany

You cannot visit Montalcino and not stop at the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, which in my opinion, is located in one of the most evocative places in Tuscany, in the solitary Starcia Valley.

According to tradition, the foundation of Sant'Antimo dates back to the 9th century, at the time of the Holy Roman Empire, led by Emperor Charlemagne, who would have founded a chapel, called the Carolingian Chapel, corresponding to the current sacristy.

However, the construction of the current church began in the 12th century. It became one of the region's wealthiest and most important monasteries on which numerous parish churches, castles, and farms depend.

The abbey lost some possessions in the communal period, including the Castle of Montalcino. At the end of the thirteenth century, the assets of Sant'Antimo were

decimated, and the monastery was in a state of decay, only to find itself in a state of neglect in the fifteenth century.

Only in 1870 began a long campaign of restorations led by the architect Giuseppe Partini, who brought the church back to its present appearance.

Where once there was the treasure room that housed the most precious objects of the abbey, today there is the monastic pharmacy.

I recommend, in your browsing among the various herbal teas, candies, creams, and many other quality products, do not miss the opportunity to taste the homemade lavender ice cream 😉

The Abbey of Sant'Antimo is ideal for those who love to spend some time in peace and silence, immersed in a splendid landscape.
