In the sunny basin crossed by the Reno River, this town is the fulcrum of an itinerary that crosses the rustic and organized beauties of the Bolognese hills... #tuttitaly
Here we are in Vergato, a small town in the province of Bologna, in the beautiful region of Emilia-Romagna. Enjoy the reading! Tasting the typical dessert, reaching the viewpoint, admiring the art, and discovering the artists of the area are some of our goals before heading to the next stage, which we will reveal at the end of this short post.
The closest airport to Vergato, for those arriving from far away, is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi, 31 km away.
If you arrive by train, in the square in front of the railway
station, you will see the suggestive mythological fountain, inaugurated in 2019.
Panoramic point
From Vergato, an itinerary leads to the top of Monte Pero, which, in May, is the setting for a unique and rare event: the flowering of the wild peony, which stands out for its flashy colors.
Luigi Ontani
Maestro Luigi Ontani, an eclectic artist of world renown, was born in Vergato. We can admire some of his works inside the Town Hall. On the ground floor is the MuseOntani, and in the Sala del Consiglio, the stained glass windows were made in 1998. (for more details, click here)
Palace of the Captains of the Mountain
The Palazzo Comunale di Vergato, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, was the seat of the Captains of the Mountain, placed at the head of the territory's government from 1414 to 1796.
The building was rebuilt after the Second World War and bore the coats of arms of the families who succeeded to the captaincy on the facade.
Typical dessert
Carsenta da l'ua (crescent with grapes) is the typical Christmas cake handed down from mother to daughter for generations. It is a preparation similar to the Bolognese caliper, inside which the grapes are added.
Around
After an exciting tour through the streets of Vergato, we'll get into the car and drive for 13 km until we get to Marzabotto, known for the Monte Sole massacre, carried out by the Nazis in 1944 against the partisans. History buffs undoubtedly see this place.
