Tricesimo (UD) - Friuli-Venezia Giulia

In its name, Tricesimo recalls a Roman settlement built 30 miles (Tricesimum or Tricensimum) from Aquileia. Probably already existed centuries before to control the critical consular road towards Noricum (present-day central Austria)... #tuttitaly

Tricesimo (UD) - Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Tricesimo rises at the foot of the first morainic hills in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The name of Tricesimo refers to a plaque that indicates the distance from the port of Aquileia and certifies its Roman origins.

The medieval castle

The Castle was inhabited by the noble family of Tricesimo, originally from Gemona.

Due to its strategic position, the manor was at the center of various struggles between the patriarch of Aquileia and the count of Gorizia. It was besieged three times from 1305 to 1310, and in 1332 it had to be fortified again.

In 1521, the manor was bought by the di Montegnacco family, who held it until 1627, when they ceded it to the noble Valentinis of Udine, who transformed it into an elegant villa.

The last descendant of the Valentinis counts gave the castle to the curia of Udine, which built the Sanctuary dedicated to the Missionary Madonna opposite in memory of the Friulians who, in the past, had to look for work abroad.

Legend has it that the Tricesimo and Cassacco castles are connected by an underground tunnel excavated when both manors belonged to the Montegnacco family (14th-16th centuries).

The dome

The principal place of worship in Tricesimo is the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Purificazione. On the south side of the building, there is an elegant Renaissance door from 1505. Inside, we can admire various valuable works, including the altarpiece representing the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, by Jacopo Palma il Giovane.
