With its two castles, it is a rare example of an ancient medieval village, well preserved and of rare charm. When you are in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, you can visit the charming medieval village of Strassoldo. A well-kept village which, as evidence of its past, has been able to preserve its castles, church, and charming old buildings.
History
Over 1000 years ago, the prestigious family of the Strassoldo Counts built an imposing defensive castle equipped with two watchtowers.
At one point in history, enemy attacks heavily damaged the manor, and for a certain period, the powerful family disappeared.
After a while, however, the counts returned to their territory and began an impressive restructuring work. They had the original fortress divided into two separate castles, each around one of the towers. Thus the Castle of Strassoldo di Sopra and the Castle of Strassoldo di Sotto were born. The inhabited center arose around these.
The Castello di Sopra is surrounded by a centuries-old park, crossed by crystalline resurgence courses, and is one of the very few in Europe that still belongs to the same family that had it built: the Counts of Strassoldo.
To reach the manor, cross the ancient Porta Cistigna and walk through the Borgo Vecchio, where the buildings used for agricultural use stand, the artisans' houses, the granaries, and the chancellery.
A little further on, we find the Castello di Sotto, whose interiors are full of antique furniture and portraits of ancestors.
At the center of the village is the church of San Nicolò, guardian of a stone cross of Longobard artistry.
The ancient 12th-century water mill ration for over 700 years lends further charm to the village.
