Strangolagalli (FR) - Ciociaria - Lazio

Strangolagalli is a picturesque town located in the Ciociaria region. With its fascinating medieval layout and characteristic alleys, the city still retains its ancient charm today. Situated in the center of a naturally protected hilly area, Strangolagalli was originally an oppidum. This fortress was tasked with defending the settlers and cultivating the surrounding lands.

What to visit

For nature lovers, the area offers a wonderful surprise: the springs found along the area's slopes. In the case of the Triano-La Piana stream, also known as Rio d'Argento, these springs create a spectacular setting of natural waterfalls that wind through lush woods.

In the heart of the town stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, a noteworthy place for visitors.

Origins of the name

Various theories try to explain the meaning of the name Strangolagalli. A possible explanation is that the name derives from the Byzantine term "strongylos," meaning "circular," and from the Lombard term "wall," meaning "palisade." This may indicate that the city was initially fortified with a circular barrier.

However, imaginative folk etymologies have also given rise to fascinating legends.

One of these tells of a siege in which the enemy had to attack at cockcrow. Therefore, the population decided to kill these poor animals to avoid attacks, thus saving the country.

Another version of the story tells that during the invasion of the Gauls, an ancient people, the inhabitants of Strangolagalli defeated their enemies with a maneuver called "strangling the Gauls." This version could be found considering the existence of a nearby location called Campo dei Galli.

Gastronomy

We cannot talk about Strangolagalli without mentioning the "stesa," an ancient and traditional city food. The "stesa" is a fried pizza prepared with a simple dough of water and flour, without yeast. After being cooked in boiling oil, it is filled with various delicious ingredients, such as cured meats, vegetables, cheeses, chocolate, and much more. This culinary delicacy is a valid symbol of the gastronomic tradition of Strangolagalli.

Conclusion

Strangolagalli is a fascinating city that combines history, nature, and unique culinary traditions. With its medieval layout, natural waterfalls, and delightful "stretch," this town offers an unforgettable experience to anyone who visits it.
