Updated: Jul 6

It is said that coming down from this alley, after four hours of very violent fighting in the alleys and houses of the old Sora, the Cominesi, albeit brave, were flushed out and decimated by the Selvaroli of Chiavone... #tuttitaly

Sora (FR) - Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - Ciociaria - Lazio

Sora, a city that stands majestically in the Roveto Valley, is surrounded by a unique context in Lazio. The Liri River accompanies its journey, while the province of Frosinone offers breathtaking scenery. But let's not be deceived by appearances because Sora is much more than a tiny town.

History

Its history dates back to Roman times when it was already notable for its strategic importance. Over the centuries, it has experienced moments of significant change, from being declared a bishopric to Norman occupation in the Middle Ages. But it doesn't end there because Sora still has many stories to tell.

After being elevated to the rank of Duchy and undergoing the suppression of its administrative title, Sora came under the protection of Napoleon Bonaparte and witnessed the Unification of Italy. But fate had an even more challenging test in store: the earthquake of 1915. However, with a strong will, the population rose from the rubble and demonstrated its readiness to evolve in every aspect.

Sora today

Sora is a city that stands out for its economic vitality. Tourism is one of its strengths, but it's not the only one.

Industry and commerce are constantly growing, with paper mills, furniture factories, and many other activities contributing to public welfare.

Tourist attractions

From an architectural point of view, Sora is a true gem. The numerous churches in the city testify to its ancient religious importance. With its majestic portal, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is just one of the many treasures that can be admired. Inside the church are valuable works of art, such as a wooden crucifix and painted triptychs.

Nature also plays a vital role in this city. The Castle of San Casto and Cassio, an imposing Renaissance fortress, dominates the horizon with its six towers. One must take an uphill walk to reach it, but the panoramic view makes up for every effort. Along the way, you can also visit the rock sanctuary of the god Silvanus, a place of great suggestion.

Gastronomy

Local dishes are a true celebration of flavors and traditions. From the "ciambella sorana" to "mostaccioli" and "susamelli", every bite is an explosion of taste. But Sora is not just about food.

Stories of courage

Sora is also a city of courage and determination. The resistance of Chiavone and his men during the Mazzinian occupation is an example of how the people of Sora have always been ready to defend their freedom and loyalty to the Bourbons. These military victories strengthened Chiavone's reputation as a charismatic and fearless leader, earning him the support and admiration of all.

Conclusion

Sora is a city that has risen from its ashes, transforming into a place of great beauty and vitality. With the Liri River as a travel companion, the Roveto Valley as a backdrop, and the province of Frosinone as a frame, Sora is ready to fascinate anyone who approaches it with its history, culture, and people.
