Sondrio (SO) - Insigne Collegiate Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio - Valtellina - Lombardy

Sondrio and Valtellina are the homeland of Bresaola, Bitto and Pizzoccheri... #tuttitaly

Sondrio is an enchanting city surrounded by majestic mountains. Its towering peaks, green valleys, and crystal-clear lakes create breathtaking scenery.

What to visit

The historic center of Sondrio is a true treasure to discover, with its narrow, winding streets, welcoming squares, and historic buildings. The wooden houses with flowered balconies and ancient stones tell the thousand-year history of this city. Walking through its streets, you can admire Renaissance frescoes that decorate the facades of the buildings, testimony to a past rich in art and culture.

Sondrio's museums are another precious resource for learning about the city and its territory. The Civic Archaeological Museum houses archaeological finds that tell the area's ancient history, while the CAST is a contemporary art museum that hosts exhibitions and cultural events.

The Collegiate Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio is another jewel of Sondrio. Located in the historic center, this church is dedicated to the city's patron saints.

The current building results from several modifications over the centuries but still preserves works of art of great value, such as the frescoes by Pietro Ligari.

Outdoor activity

But the real treasure of Sondrio is the surrounding landscape. The mountains, forests, and lakes offer endless possibilities for outdoor activities, from mountain excursions to walks along the paths, from skiing on snow-covered slopes to relaxing on the banks of the lakes.

Local products

Valtellina is famous for producing gastronomic delicacies: Bresaola, Bitto, and Pizzoccheri. Bresaola is a raw, unsmoked cured meat made from beef's prized salted and dried muscle mass, while Bitto is a hard cheese produced with cow's and goat's milk. Pizzoccheri, conversely, are buckwheat pasta seasoned with cabbage, potatoes, cheese, and melted butter.

Conclusion

Sondrio and Valtellina perfectly combine natural beauty, culinary traditions, and historical-artistic heritage. A visit to this enchanting city and its surrounding valley is an unforgettable experience that allows you to discover the richness of a land with a thousand facets.
