According to legend, the city was founded by the Greek hero Diomedes called Castrum Drionis (Casteldrione), and traces of Neolithic settlements have been found here... #tuttitaly
San Severo is an Apulian city in the province of Foggia, which, from an economic point of view, lives mainly in agriculture, producing wine and oil, wheat, fruit, and vegetables. The wine, famous worldwide and made in San Severo, received DOC recognition in 1968. Among the refined products, we also find the Dauno olive oil, which holds the DOP mark.
Some remains found in the countryside of San Severo, built in ancient Daunia, testify to the presence in the territory of various settlements already in the Neolithic period.
Legend
A Renaissance legend tells that the city was founded by the Greek hero Diomede named Castrum Drionis (Casteldrione). Subsequently, in 536, San Lorenzo Maiorano, bishop of Siponto, would have imposed the name of a governor called Severo, which he converted to Christianity: an event that ended paganism in the city.
History and Culture
Thanks to its historic center, rich in monuments, in 2006, San Severo received recognition as a city of art. In addition to bell towers with majolica Spiers, numerous Baroque buildings overlook its medieval streets.
Worthy of note is the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the eleventh century, which houses numerous works of art, including some paintings from the eighteenth century and a baptismal font from 1100.
The oldest Church building in San Severo is the Mother Church of San Severino Abate, named after the first patron saint of the city and the entire diocese, founded in the 11th century. The church stood on the ancient Via Sacra Longobardorum and was visited by a continuous stream of pilgrims.
Another building of great historical and cultural interest is the Giuseppe Verdi Municipal Theater, built in 1937, one of Puglia's most prominent theaters.
Also worthy of note is the Villa Comunale, a large public garden built in the nineteenth century, full of long avenues and small monuments.
Demonstrations
On May 8, the Festa del Soccorso is held, dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso (second city patroness): grand Baroque celebrations with great processions and fireworks.
